Apply for an irrigation meter

Connect an irrigation meter to our network.

Please note:

  • An irrigation meter must only be used for irrigation, with no discharge to the wastewater network.
  • The meter must not be used to fill a swimming pool.

Irrigation meters and your wastewater charges

If you install an irrigation meter, it will affect the amount you pay for wastewater services inside your home or building. This is because we will assume that more of the water that enters your home or building will go down your drain – none of it will be used for outdoor purposes.

Backflow prevention

All irrigation supplies must have a testable backflow device, which we install when we put in the irrigation meter.

Each year, you must test the device and provide the test certificate and meter bypass details to us.

How to apply

If you want to connect an irrigation meter to our water network, please follow the steps below.

Prepare your information

Please make sure you provide all the required information and documents listed below. This will avoid delays in processing your application.

Required for ALL applications for an irrigation meter:
  • Property address: the legal address that complies with Auckland Council numbering
  • Lot and DP numbers, and Certificate of Title (CT), if property has a separate title: Find your CT on Auckland Council’s website. Enter your address, then choose the Property Information tab
  • Property owner’s details
  • Onsite contact person, e.g. plumber or builder
  • Applicant’s details (if different)
  • Site or drainage plan showing all existing and proposed public/private drains, private water pipes and backflow prevention devices
Commercial customers, please also provide:
  • Water meter diameter (mm).
  • Estimated peak flow (litres/second).
  • Estimated increase in average daily water use (litres/day).
  • Calculations for these estimations.

If there will be an increase in water demand for the property, through a change of use, we also need to know:
  • Estimated daily water use (litres), to determine your infrastructure growth charges.
  • Whether development contributions for water or wastewater for the property have been paid to Auckland Council or the previous local authority.
Apply
We recommend that you apply well ahead of the required installation date:
  • Domestic connection: apply at least six weeks before
  • Commercial connection: apply 10 weeks before.

Applying for an irrigation sprinkler connection would be part of your commercial or residential connections application.

We will either send you an application number or request any missing information, before we start our technical assessment.

During the assessment we review your information and plans, and work out the logistics of installing your new connection. We also calculate the full cost, based on:
  • how long the assessment takes
  • the scale and complexity of your connection and whether or not any other charges, such as traffic management, will apply
  • whether infrastructure growth charges will apply.
Invoice
  • Domestic customers: We send you an invoice after we have assessed your application.
  • Non-domestic customers: We send you a quote based on your requirements. Once you accept this quote, we will invoice you for all charges.

Pay

You need to pay your invoice in full before we can book the installation.

Install

Our contractors will provide the irrigation meter and connect it to the public network. They will also install the backflow prevention device. Please note they will not carry out any private plumbing on your side of the point of supply.

  • Water charges will apply from the time your irrigation meter is installed.
  • You need to test your backflow prevention device annually.
What is the time frame for installing a connection?
  • You can expect an invoice within 10 days of when we receive your application.
  • We aim to deliver the service you have requested within 15 working days of receiving payment.
When does billing start?

We start charging from the time we install the meter.
