Why is the project needed?

As part of the emergency drought response of 2020, our team collaborated with Auckland Council on several initiatives to support commercial customers including the establishment of non-potable (water you cannot drink) tanker filling stations to help those affected by water restrictions that were in place at the time. While these tanker filling stations were originally created as a temporary measure, a permanent tanker filling station in Māngere would be of benefit to our commercial customers.

Work to construct a permanent non-potable tanker filling station on the corner of Greenwood Road and Ascot Road, adjacent to the Māngere wastewater treatment plant, will begin on 29 July and is expected to be completed by mid-December 2024.

What is non-potable water?

Non-potable water is not for drinking and is used by commercial customers for construction or house cleaning purposes. This helps reduce pressure on our drinking water supply and can be convenient for work use.

What’s happening?

Our contractor, Drill Force, will be drilling a new 150mm diameter bore to a depth of approximately 50 metres to store non-potable water for wholesale supply. The non-potable water will be accessed via a new tanker filling station that will be located on Greenwood Road to enable easy access for tankers.

The drilling work is expected to start week commencing Monday 29 July and will take approximately two weeks to complete. This work is not expected to be disruptive. Once this is completed, work will start on the drive-in access.

How will this work affect you?

Working hours

  • Between 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Saturday work will only be used if necessary.

Traffic

  • Traffic management shouldn't be required during these works. Once the tanker station is operational, we expect a slight increase in truck traffic on the road during the summer, but we do not anticipate major changes to the current traffic pattern.

Noise

  • It is anticipated that there will be localised noise from the works, however, we will aim to keep this to a minimum.

Tree removal

  • Will be taking place as part of the preparation work. Initially, two trees will be removed. As the project progresses there may be the requirement for further tree pruning or removal if they are in close proximity or inside the active construction zone. All pruning and tree removal will be carried out by a professional arborist who will adhere to Council tree protection zone requirements at all times.
