Why is the project needed?

We are undertaking upgrades to the water network to cater for current and future development and population growth in the area. The project involves the construction of approximately 4,200 metres of new watermain with sections ranging from 200mm to 610mm in diameter, A new bulk supply point will also be constructed as part of the project. It enable 7,200 new dwellings proposed by Kāinga Ora, plus 770 infill dwellings within the Wesley neighbourhood.

Wesley watermains work timeline for August 2024 and beyond

Completed sections of work

Construction of a new bulk supply point chamber in the road near 2 La Veta Avenue and a pipeline connecting to an existing bulk supply point chamber on Richardson Road was completed in May 2022.

Our contractor Fulton Hogan recently completed the early works package. That area has included O’Donnell Avenue, Parkinson Avenue, Farrelly Avenue and Denize Road.

Current and upcoming works

Before we start the main construction works, our contractor Fulton Hogan will begin pre-construction investigations on Wednesday 28 August. These works are required to locate existing services and take ground samples in the roadway and will take approximately 15 working days (Monday to Friday) to complete, weather permitting. These investigations will take place on the streets shown in orange on the map above.

The investigations will involve a truck hydro-excavating a section in the road to locate existing services. There will be multiple investigations completed as we move along the project work area. Traffic management will be in place in the form of one-way detours and stop/go. Once the investigation work is complete, each area will be backfilled and reinstated.

Update on the start of the main works

We hope to begin laying the new watermain in early September. Our work areas will be as follows:

9 September until late March 2025

  • Our crew will be working on Richardson Road from the Richardson Road/La Veta Avenue intersection down to approximately just past the Hendon Avenue/Richardson Road intersection (to approximately 163 Richardson Road). Please refer to the map for the section of works.

9 September until early May 2025

  • Our crew will be working on Denny Avenue, Mt Roskill as shown on the map above.

How will this affect you?

  • Working hours - will be between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday for the service investigations, and Monday to Saturday for the main construction works. Saturday work will only be utilised if required.
  • Please allow extra time for travelling as there will be times when machinery will need to move to allow vehicles to pass by.
  • Street parking within the work zone will be restricted. Please park within your property if possible.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained. There may be times where foot traffic is detoured to keep everyone safe. Please follow all posted signage.
  • Construction works will create noise, vibration, and dust. We will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum and will be working in accordance with the levels under the Auckland Unitary Plan.
